If you’re starting university this year, congratulations! It’s going to be an experience full of new friends, new opportunities and (of course) a whole lot of learning. While it’s normal to feel intimidated by everything ahead of you, there’s no need to stress out completely.

To help you hit the ground running, here are five tips to keep in mind for your first year:

Get involved on campus

There are tons of clubs and organisations you can join! Getting involved in extracurricular activities is a great way to make friends, explore your interests and build your résumé. Who knows? You might even find a new hobby you never thought you’d enjoy.

Pro Tip: try out for the track team or join the chess club – what do you have to lose?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Whether you’re struggling with a strenuous class or feeling homesick, it’s important to remember there are people on campus who want to help you succeed. Don’t be nervous of reaching out to your professors, advisors or peers for assistance.

Pro Tip: when a professor critiques your work, they’re doing you a favour. The more red lines on your paper, the more time the professor took to point out ways for you to improve.

Be proactive about your mental health

University can be stressful, make sure you take care of yourself physically and mentally! Eat well, exercise regularly, get enough sleep and take breaks when needed. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, seek out counselling services on campus.

Pro Tip: be patient with yourself. You will make errors or mistakes during your collegiate career – but you are not DOOMED.

Prioritise your time wisely

Time management is vital – you’ll quickly learn that there are only so many hours in a day! Try using a planner or scheduling app to stay organised and on top of your workload.

Pro Tip: not managing your time causes stress which will only cause headaches, anxiety, anger and pimples – and nobody has time for any of that!

Have fun!

University is about learning and preparing for your future – but it’s also about enjoying yourself. Explore your campus and city, try new things and make memories to last forever.
